Humanist Naming Ceremony

From My Second Brain

A naming ceremony is a ceremony celebrated by some humanists to welcome a new baby. The ceremony can take place in a home, garden or park.

As part of the ceremony the parents will:

  • make promises about how they will bring up the baby
  • talk about the hopes and dreams they have for the baby
  • talk about the type of person they hope the baby will grow up to be

Other things which can happen at the naming ceremony are:

  • special readings or poems may be read out
  • a naming certificate may be signed
  • a meal may be shared
  • a tree may be planted

Guide parents

The parents may choose guide parents in the ceremony.
