Mammal
Appearance
Recognising a Mammal
All mammals:
- Have a backbone under the skin
- Breath air
- Have hair on fur on their body at some point in their life
- Are warm-blooded, this means their body stays the same temperature even if the temperature around them changes.
- Give birth to live young (most)
- Are fed from their mother's milk
Not all mammals live on land though. As an example a whale is a mammal which lives in water - it needs to come up to the surface to breath air.
Did you know more than half of all mammal species are rodents [1], a group which includes squirrels, hamsters, mice and guinea pigs.
