Fish
Some animals that live in water belong to a group called fish. As they live in water fish are excellent swimmers and some can swim very fast. As an example bluefin tuna, who live in the Atlantic Ocean can swim at speeds of over 40 mph[1].
Fish can be large or small, the largest fish is the whale shark which is around the same length as a bus.
Fish can either be found in seas where others can be found in rivers or lakes. Salmon are born in rivers and then swim out to the sea. To help them in their watery habitat fish have a swim bladder which is a pocket of air inside itself which helps it to balance in water.
Fish breathe through their gills that can be found inside their body behind small openings on the side of their head.
Like reptiles most fish have scales on their bodies.
Fish eat other fish, plants and plankton.
Fish communicate via sound.
Did you know over 30,000 different species of fish have been discovered so far and they don't sleep and don't need to blink as the water keeps their eyes moist they don't have eye lids.
The fish life cycle
Fish are born as eggs which develop into larvae and finally into fry when they first start looking like a fish.
