Ink is a coloured liquid that is used for writing or drawing.

Artists can buy ink or they can make it themselves with natural materials. For example if you add water to the spice turmeric it creates a yellow coloured ink.

Making Ink From Natural Materials

Water can be added to the following natural materials to create ink:

Artists can also make ink by grinding materials. For example:

Other ways to make ink

  • steep tea of coffee in water and use the resulting liquid as ink
  • use beetroot juice mixed with vinegar
  • crush edible berries to get a range of purple and reds

Method

  1. If necessary crush or blend the natural material
  2. Add water
  3. Mix until usable

Note: adding different liquids to the ink may change its colour and the ink may also change colour as it dries.

Also note artwork created using these supplies will be temporary as the ink degrades unless the ink is mixed with some kind of preservative.
