Birds are animals with a backbone (this makes them vertebrates), wings, beaks and feathers. Although all birds have wings this doesn't mean they can all fly. Penguins for example can't fly but are really good swimmers and ostriches can't fly but are excellent runners. Some birds feathers are brightly coloured like a peacock to help them scare away other animals whereas others are more plain to help them hide from predators.
All birds lay eggs and to keep them safe most create nests. The cheeky little cuckoo however lays there eggs in other birds nests, leaving them to look after their young.
