A design specification is something that describes what a product has to do. It identifies the user of the product, the needs of that user and what the product needs to achieve.

After creating a design specification it is common for designers to make sketches to help share their ideas.

Once a designer is happy to proceed with one of the designs they will draw their final design and add more details about things like colour and shape.

From this design they will then choose the materials they want to use to build their product.
